The Quilt Museum at The Old Country Store

The Quilt Museum’s new 2012 quilt exhibit features 9 original quilts designed and pieced by Jo Morton, a nationally-known and highly respected fabric and quilt designer.
These one-of-a-kind quilts are among Morton’s personal favorites in the extensive collection of quilts she has designed for the 20 books she’s authored.
“I find great pleasure in creating new quilts that look old, and also in creating small quilts that carry the special charm of antiques,” Morton comments. She has made these 9 quilts with 19th-century history firmly in her mind as she worked. Each exquisite quilt reflects particular historical periods in their color and/or style.
Jan Mast, manager of The Quilt Museum and Museum Shoppe, curated the show. “Jo’s eye for authentic period design, and her exceptional sense of color, pair beautifully to make reliable reproduction fabric designs. Then she blends her own fabric designs with her original quilt patterns to produce extraordinary masterpieces. What a privilege we have at the Quilt Museum to exhibit quilts which Jo made from her own original patterns and created from fabrics which she also designed,” says Mast. “This is a rarity!”
Jo’s 9 quilts join the Quilt Museum’s current exhibit entitled, A Showcase of Quilts: Dazzling Contemporary Creations, which include 13 additional quilts made by a variety of other contemporary quiltmakers. Each quilt was selected for its outstanding design, color, and workmanship.
A number of educational features about the art and practice of quilt-making are scattered throughout the exhibit.
Admission is free. The Museum is open year-round Mondays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on the second floor of the historic Old Country Store along Route 340 in the village of Intercourse, PA.
Covered By Glory: Civil War Commemorative Quilts
http://www.groutmuseumdistrict.org/
Covered By Glory: Civil War Commemorative Quilts During the Civil War many women turned to needlework to fill the long lonesome hours and as a refuge from the stress and worry of war. They utilized their skills to support their families, create necessary items for soldiers and raise money for the cause. When the war was over they expressed feelings about the past by stitching commemorative quilts celebrating victory and honoring those who died. A century and a half later the sacrifices are still remembered with commemorative fabrics, patterns and quilts that mark the Sesquicentennial of the War Between the States. Covered by Glory: Civil War Commemorative Quilts will showcase several quilts, some that were made during the era and commemorative quilts made from ten to 150 years later. Photographs, archives and more will enhance this exhibit remembering the Civil War.
3 of Jo Morton’s quilts are included in this exhibit.
