2017 Moda BlockHeads BOW, Block 41 and a give away

Our most favorite day of the week . . . Wednesday!!!!

I’m beginning to think someone slips in an extra Wednesday some weeks, they sure roll around fast.  LOL

First the question of the week:  Do we make any Christmas presents, hummm, short answer for me is no.  I guess I’ve reached the age of have everything I need or want, which means same for my friends/family.  Sometimes picking up the tab at lunch is a good gift, or buying gas on a road trip, sharing a favorite recipe, taking the time for coffee and a visit is precious.  There are many ways to show friends and family we love them, doesn’t always have to be wrapped or in a gift bag.  This is my life, no judgement, maybe yours is different?

Of course if there are children or grand-children involved it all changes!  I’m talking about my life.

I want to share that during the Christmas Season, my most favorite movie is ‘The Miracle on 34th Street’, for me must be the 1947 versions in black and white, staring Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne and Natalie Wood.  Yes ‘I Believe’.  And we have it on DVD so I can see it in B&W.

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

This weeks Block is by our friend Lisa Bongean, the block directions can be found on her Blog:  https://lisabongean.com/

First I’ll share my clipping and pressing, I press and clip because I have most of my quilts custom quilted, so I like to be able to provide a ‘ditch’ for quilting, then the machine quilter can add nice curves, feathers, etc.  I always have a reason for what I do.

Block 41, clipping and pressing

Now my block version:

Block 41

Enjoy making your version!

Please DO NOT forget to check our friends Blogs for their version of this block (and their giveaways):

Jan Patek – http://janpatek.blogspot.com/

Betsy Chutchian – http://betsysbestquiltsandmore.blogspot.com/

And . . . do not forget to check the permanent page, it is updated weekly to include the new block and the links, and . . . the most recent version of David’s Directory for the FB Group that includes links to everything BlockHeads related.

This week we have an added gift, maybe I should say a chance at a gift, and hopefully it ‘may’ arrive on your door step before Christmas.  I’m also fine if a gift arrives after Christmas because the load of mail and packages is amazing, aren’t we lucky we have great mail delivery people and of course the big brown truck brings good stuff, and I can’t forget to mention FedEx!

A give away – you have to “leave a comment to enter”, the prize is my new book with Martingale “Jo’s Floral Album’, PLUS a F8 Bundle (you know that means Fat Eighth) of New Hope which ships to your local/favorite quilt shop in January!  This line is perfect to begin the appliqué blocks featured in my new book.  Will pick a winner on Monday December 18th,and e-mail them for their mailing address – NO P.O. Boxes please!

Hopefully the prize will be delivered before Christmas, if not, you will receive it after Christmas, after all it is the busiest time of the year!

Here is my less than professional picture, I’m sewing with these fabrics so it appears to be a bit of a mess, the winner will receive a beautifully folded F8 bundle!

Jo’s Floral Album book and New Hope fabrics

And a quick tip, there are full color pictures of each block in the book, these block pictures measure about 7 1/2″, add a bit more background plus seam allowance and you will have an option for a 9″ block for a small, one block medallion (add borders of your choice), or a smaller version of the featured quilt!  The book also has a pull out section with full size patterns for the 12″ finished blocks, ready for your favorite method of appliqué.  My favorite method is the ‘back-basting prep method for needleturn appliqué’.  No messing around to position loose pieces and parts.  Ready to go!  Thank You Martingale!  User friendly is very important.

Whew that is a lot this week.

Wishes that your home is decorated and ready for Christmas, shopping done, baking done, now time for a coffee with a good friend, or a glass of wine with a loved one.

Until next Wednesday . . . enjoy the Christmas Season, the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Favorite Christmas movie? A Christmas Carol

  15. My favorite Christmas show is White Christmas. I don’t think I will ever get tired of watching that show. I will have to check out your new book for I just love doing hand applique.

  16. With all of the wonderful Christmas movies playing nonstop on the Hallmark channels, it is hard to pick just one favorite, but each year I do enjoy watching the older movies on TCM and Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan is one I don’t miss.

My favorite movie is a fairly new one. The Christmas Card. Hallmark produced. Where the women sends the soldier a Christmas card about her town, and he comes to visit. Ed Asner plays her father, and curly fries are a major part of the movie! Happy holidays!

  20. Oh my! My favorite Christmas movie is Prancer! It’s such a wonderful story about a young girl and keeping Christmas in our hearts. Now I even have a special night when the grandchildren come over and watch Prancer in new Christmas jammies! 24. Love your beautiful applique blocks. Applique is quick becoming a favorite as I enjoy hand stitching. Would love to win a copy.

  30. I am in love with all Christmas movies. The hallmark channel is usually on in my house 24×7 during the holiday season. I just love those feel good movies. I would have to say my favorite holiday movie is The Santa Clause.

  35. Hi Jo and Merry Christmas! My favorite Christmas movie is “Love, Actually”. I watch it every Christmas while snuggled up on the couch with a hand quilting project. This year I’m quilting one of your patterns. You snapped a photo of it a few years ago and shared on your blog how you decorated with quilts – it was hanging on the wall behind your lovely primitive Santa. I’ve enjoyed the Blockhead Patterns this year and thrilled that so many of my favorite designers are participating! Peace and Joy to you and your loved ones in the coming New Year!!

  36. My favorite movie is “White Christmas” – watched it as a teenager while babysitting during the holiday season and I have to still watch it, at least once, every Christmas! Thanks for the chance to win your fabulous give away! Merry Christmas, Jo! HUGS… and stitches

Thank you for inspiring. Merry Christmas.

  39. Merry Christmas, Jo, and Merry Christmas to all of you “Jo Fans.” A gift of your new book plus some of your new fabric line would make Christmas even brighter!
It’s impossible for me to choose just one favorite Christmas movie but one, perhaps not as well known, has special memories. Emmett Otter’s Jughouse Band was, and still is, my son’s favorite. I can still hear him giggling and laughing as he watched it.

  40. My favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. Have watched it every year for a long time. (We have a DVD too!). Thanks for the opportunity for a giveaway

  41. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I fully understand the value of friendship over things. Hope you have a great New Year.

    Merry Christmas!

  43. I love the B&W versions of both Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life. I also love, love Jo’s fabrics. She’s been my favorite designer for years.

  44. My favorite Christmas movie is “Holiday Inn” Made a couple of small gifts this year, and may get some New Year’s gifts made too. We will see once I get back from a short trip.

  45. Finishing up 4 Christmas gifts hopefully. I am making one for myself and the other 3 are for my daughters. My project is one and one half inch squares that piece together to form an old red pickup truck with 3 Christmas trees in the bed. Binding and adding sleeve to back so it can be a table runner or a wall hanging. So cute!

  46. Blockheads has allowed me to get to know the designers through their blocks — its been a journey I look forward to every Wednesday.. I would love to receive your book and fabrics and then share with my friend who loves your line of fabrics.

  47. My favorite movie is A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott. A new book and fabric? What could be better to start the new year?

I also liked to watch a movie all by myself when they were little and went off to bed and I was up doing Santa duty. It was such a peaceful time but with lots of excitement and anticipation. Merry Christmas to you!

  59. Ooh, pretty block and pretty book. I am with you on that version of the movie. We also watch It’s a Wonderful Life each year. Never hurts to be reminded in this day and age that “ordinary” is extrordinary and affects so many people in a positive way.
    Shuna

  82. My favorite Christmas movie is Frosty ever since I was a young child, although since I have become an adult the movie Christmas Shoes has been a favorite. I love these movies because it makes me think of enjoying people while we still have them with us. Thanks for the opportunity to win such an awesome gift! Merry Christmas!

  83. I like your attitude for this time of year. Everyone seems to add undo stress during the holidays. all anyone in my family seems to want is my time. I plan on making it happen by visiting my daughter and her family this Christmas. I can’t wait.

  84. Once again beautiful fabric and a wonderful book! My favorite Christmas movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I watch movies while I sew and am in the middle of that one right now! Merry Christmas!

I love your attitude by the way of Christmas gifts. I want to do that more.

  88. Another holiday movie that doesn’t get much mention is It Happened on Fifth Avenue. It is delightful too in black and white. Just one pincushion was made for an upcoming exchange. Thank you for the chance to win. I think gifts received after Christmas are the best!! Allison C Bayer Plano Texas USA allon0711@yahoo.com

  89. Thank you for posting the backs of your blocks. Your inspiration makes my blocks like flat. The book looks wonderful, just like your fabric. Happy holidays!

  90. I like your take on Christmas shopping at this stage of my life also… hmmm might have to make some changes. I do make hand made gifts for a few and think I always will. I get more pleasure making and giving then they probably do receiving. LOL
Merry Christmas to you and yours and thanks for a chance at your lovely book.

  97. Watching the Hallmark movies this year and all of the decorating and idyllic places that do not really exist! Would love to win!

  98. My favourite is “Holiday Inn” Maybe not the most Christmassy of movies but it is where the song “white Christmas” was introduced and that certainly is the most Christmassy of songs.

  99. The Bishop’s Wife – can’t beat Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven! I do like the older Miracle on 34th Street and I love the musical version of “Scrooge” with Albert Finney! But wait, what about White Christmas and Holiday Inn! I’ve been watching a lot of movies while I’ve been stitching this Christmas…

  100. I have had that book on my list since I first saw it on Martingale’s site. I also love the old black and white version of Miracle on 34th street.

  103. Jo – The colors in your new line are just wonderful. Favorite Christmas move? Can’t decide whether it’s “The Bishop’s Wife (Cary Grant and Loretta Young) or “It’s a Wonderful Life” (Jimmy Stewart) — always watch both

  104. I love your patterns and tips and especially the fabrics – would live to win the new book and fabric – Merry Christmas!!!

  105. My sister and I have started “exchanging” charity donations. We love it! She picks her favorite charity and donates her money telling me about it (that way I don’t get added to a mailing list) and I pick mine and donate thinking of her. It actually feels very fun and takes pressure off us. She loves children so this year I picked donating to a ministry giving gifts to children in Russia and also paying for them to attend a winter camp. A perfect ‘gift’ for my sister. She loved it!
My favorite movie at Christmas is Little Women…also about sisters 🙂
Thank you for the fun giveaway!

  106. I have been a fan forever, your quilting is beautiful. Looking forward to making block 41. I would love to win the block giveaway.

  107. Thanks for this chance to win this beautiful fabric, Jo! I’ve so enjoyed seeing your blocks on the BH journey. My favourite Christmas movie is Elf. Even typing the movie name makes me laugh! So, so, so funny!

  108. My favorite Christmas movie……has to be Home Alone! Mainly because I have 2 grandsons that love it and come to my house every year and we watch it together before Christmas. The one is a teenager and he still comes and spends the night and we watch both Home Alone’s! And we laugh and laugh. It never gets old. I also love White Christmas…..but my time with my grandsons is priceless!

  109. Love your newest fabric line “New Hope”. We already have a project in mind with the reds and blacks. Have a peaceful Christmas. Favorite Christmas movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

  110. I like watching the Santa Clause series with Tim Allen. My mother also enjoyed watching those with our kids.
I can’t wait to get my hands on your new line! Thanks Jo, for the inspiration!

  111. Miracle on 34th Street in black and white is definitely my favorite, followed closed by “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Thank you for all of the blocks you’ve contributed and all of your pressing hints. I’ve learned a lot!

  112. Ooooh. A new applique possibility! I always have a new project lined up for after Christmas. My stress reliever for getting through the holidays.

  113. I love “The Bishop’s Wife” at this time of year. That’s the original, with David Niven, Cary Grant and the luminous Loretta Young.

  114. I have been a fan of your designs and fabrics for a long time. I keep all your fabrics separate in my stash! The release of a new line or new book from you was always a reason to drive the hour and a half to my “local” quilt shop. Sadly it has closed so I do most of my shopping online. I miss seeing everything in person.

  115. I love seeing each Wednesday’s block. I’ve got behind again but will catch up. But I can say that I have completed quite a few “quilty” gifts for family and friends. My favorite Christmas movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life” partly because of the story and partly because of good old Jimmy Stewart.

  116. My favorite Christmas movie is Holiday Inn where Bing Crosby first sings White Christmas. My Mother and I would spend endless nights watching Christmas movies.

  117. My favorite Christmas movie is A Year Without a Santa Claus. I love those claymation movies from my childhood. I don’t feel like it is Christmas time until I watch it. In fact, I usually watch it on Halloween night as I decorate the house for Thanksgiving.

  118. Merry Christmas Jo!
I have enjoyed learning from you while working on the blockheads! Thank you for sharing with us!

I first heard the story on the radio one snowy night as we were driving from northern IL to southern IL to spend Christmas at my grandparent’s house along with my aunt, uncle, and cousins from AL. I must have been eight. It was before the time of seat belts and Interstates, so it was a long trip. But I loved the story then and later the movie. I am now 75, but the memory still brings a smile to my face. I can remember sitting by my father in the front seat as I listened.
