2017 Moda BlockHeads, block 14

Question this week:  when we teach, what is the one tip you always share:   I have only ‘one rule’ in making my quilts, ‘keep your rotary cutter closed when not in use’.  Other than that, we are all wired differently, we will therefore have different ways that work best for us, quiltmaking is not one size fits all. I think it is fun that there are many ways to accomplish the same thing!

The Square in a Square block this week is by our friend Betsy Chutchian. It is a fun block to make.  Go to her Blog to download the block file.

I want to share how I cut stripes for a block like this.  Sometimes I like to tame my stripes, other days I let them go every which way.

To tame the stripes, note that the 2 squares are cut in opposite directions, or a ‘V’,  this will allow you to line up the stripes around a square.

cut the 2 squares of stripe fabric in opposite direction

see how the stripe lines up

sew to opposite sides of center unit

looking good

my block this week, lots of controlled stripes

Pressing and squaring up is easy this week

some of my blocks so far, this one fits in nicely

Be sure and check the Blogs from the rest of our friends for their tips and tricks.

Happy Hump Day from Jo
