2017 Moda BlockHeads BOW, block 13

What is the best tip I’ve ever learned in quiltmaking?  I think it was when my friend Betsy taught me to use triangle paper a few years ago.  I thank her every time I need to make lots and lots of HST for projects.  I’m a wee bit old fashioned to the core, it takes a friend to get my attention with something I haven’t done before.  I still use my Bloc Loc Rulers for squaring up, wouldn’t be without them.

This week, block 13 is by our friend Lynne Hagmeier, go to Lynne’s Blog to download the block directions.

The block directions give Lynne’s layered piecing technique.

Me, I’m an old fashioned traditional quilter, so my solution was to draw up a 3″ Bow Tie block, trace and cut out 2 templates, then hand piece the blocks. I sewed the 4 blocks together on the sewing machine.

This evening was lovely outside, so I sat on the patio and hand pieced the blocks (didn’t take long, less than an hour) and listened to the birds sing.  I could hear and also watch young birds, they are so funny learning their flying skills, they tend to flutter around with less than graceful landings, and I can hear it, and see it.

This is one of my hand pieced blocks, showing how I pressed it.

Then I machine sewed 4 blocks together – ta da!!!

Lastly this is how I pressed my block.

Have fun with this one!  Until next week – happy sewing!

  1. Jo, this is a much better way for me to do this block….I haven’t made this block in years, so glad I read your blog first. I love hand piecing and I love the way this looks too. Thanks again….

  2. Jo, I may be doing something wrong, but is there a way to get to square one? I just finished a quilt and thought this would be a great next project. Thank you in advance. Love all of your fabrics!
